Excavations

Digging archaeology out of the ground is inherently destructive and is not to be undertaken lightly, but it offers a unique insight into the past, and is one of a range of techniques used by BCAP.

There are several stages to the excavation process.

Pre-excavation
Coordination (assembling team & equipment, and setting excavation schedule)
Historical research (Internet, books, libraries etc)
Health & Safety site visit (deciding where best to dig)

During excavation
Digging and interpreting (a range of fitness levels, and 'detective work')
    Recording (drawings, photographs & video)
Finds cleaning (a bit like washing up, but much more fun!)

Post-excavation
Finds identification (experienced and inexperienced welcome)
Site Report compilation & publication (wide range of desk-based activities)
Publicity & media management (various roles, from press releases to hosting public meetings)

There is something for everyone, and all these opportunities are shared among several people, at least. While some activities may be over-subscribed, we shall do our best to give everyone the chance to get involved with hands-on archaeology. For insurance purposes, everyone taking an active part in our excavations must be a member of BCAP.

This is the sort of large-scale, multi-faceted venture only an active group can achieve. And this is where BCAP is an invaluable resource to the community — it exists to coordinate and support archaeological activities that anyone working alone would struggle to tackle.

If you would like to become actively involved in excavations, or wish to suggest a site for a test pit in Brislington (which includes the neighbourhoods of Arno's Vale, Broomhill, Flowers Hill, Hick's Gate, St Anne's, and West Town, etc), please contact us.
