Avon Valley Walk

On Sunday 25th April 2010 BCAP members joined with the Friends of Troopers Hill to walk through St Anne's Woods and Nightingale Valley. This event wass organised in association with South Bristol Riverscapes, and altogether more than forty people took part.

Among the many ancient features in the wooded valley of Brislington Brook are the holy well of St Anne in St Anne's Woods — the photograph shows some ribbons tied to overhanging boughs in the top left. In Nightingale Valley is an old stone bridge said to be of medieval origin — the photograph shows older masonry jutting out from side of the the mid 20th century rebuilding (and in the brook itself some wood-framed masonry marks the site of a ford).

Also in Nightingale Valley is the unsual sight of a hollow tree that has been partially infilled by masonry. This old plane tree stands beside the ruin of a stone bridge that once crossed Brislington Brook — the dark gap at the top of an arch can just be seen immediately in front of the trunk (slightly toward the left).
